I am driven by the questions: How do cells make coordinated decisions in seemingly chaotic environments, and how do stressors such as aging affect their ability to do so?
I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Quantitative Biology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where I worked in the lab of Dr. Stephanie Gupton. There, I investigated how plasma membrane tension influences modes of exocytosis in developing cortical neurons. I then joined the Developmental and Stem Cell Biology PhD program at the University of California, San Francisco, where I earned my PhD in the lab of Dr. Todd Nystul. During my doctoral studies, I developed a strong interest in reproductive aging, characterizing how the somatic lineage of the Drosophila ovary ages and investigating strategies to extend reproductive longevity through somatic genetic manipulation.
As a postdoc in the Mogessie Lab, I am shifting my focus from the soma to the oocyte to understand cytoskeletal and chromosome segregation defects that contribute to reproductive aging in the germline. I look forward to developing this work and, ultimately, bringing together perspectives on somatic and germ cell aging to better understand why the ovary is among the most rapidly aging tissues.
