July 2024– Binyam was selected as a 2024 Pew Scholar. Congrats Binyam!!!

June 2024– Undergraduate students Andrea Rix (funded by the Yale College Dean’s Research Fellowship) and Lidia Ghirmay (funded by the Yale College First-Year Summer Research Fellowship) joined for us for the summer. Welcome Andrea and Lidia!

June 2024– Sarah Bolarinwa joined us for a second summer as a visiting undergraduate student through the Yale Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program. Welcome back Sarah!

June 2024 – Jiyeon was awarded the prestigious Sejong Science Fellowship (Overseas Training Track) supported by the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) for her proposal “Illumination of the ‘black box’ in understanding the actin-microtubule crosstalk in mammalian oocytes and embryos.” Congrats Jiyeon!!!!

January 2023 – Sam, the first PhD student in the lab, has successfully defended his thesis! His paper got published only two days later! Perfect timing Sam, and many congratulations!!

September 2022 – excellent news. The lab is funded by NIH NIGMS R35 award!

April 2022 – the move is on the move!

The Mogessie lab will be joining the Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology at Yale University in 2022.

Dec 19, 2019 – And so we end a great run of 2019 with a Mogessie Lab Christmas dinner at the Giggling Squid 🙂 Happy Holidays gang!!!

Aug 8, 2019 – Elanor’s goodbye dinner. It’s been a fun summer having you in the lab Elanor. We’re grateful to the Wellcome Trust for funding Elanor’s time in the lab through a Biomedical Vacation Scholarship.

April 4, 2019 – Delighted to have been a awarded a Young Investigators’ Research Grant from the Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP). This grant will support a very exciting collaborative adventure with our good friends Daniele Fachinetti (Institut Curie) and Stefanie Redemann (University of Virginia).

February 1, 2019 – A very big welcome to Dr. Kathleen Scheffler, the first ever postdoc in the #eggsnchromosomes lab 🙂

January 1, 2019 – We have started the year with a generous Sir Henry Dale Fellowship from the Wellcome Trust and Royal Society. We are very thankful for their support!

September 24, 2018 – We are pleased to announce that the lab has been awarded a Research Grant from the Royal Society.

August 9, 2018 – Delighted to find out that the Rosetrees Trust has agreed to fund some of our work for two years!

June 16-17, 2018 – Participation in the University of Bristol Open Day was a great opportunity to showcase some of the work we’re doing in the School of Biochemistry to students and parents. Public engagement is key to our research goals and there will be more of it happening soon.

June 6, 2018 – Delighted to have been awarded a Seed Award from the Wellcome Trust to explore some unexpected functions of actin in mammalian oocyte meiosis!! 🙂 🙂

June 4, 2018 – Today the School of Biochemistry welcomes Nina Webb, the first summer vacation student in the lab. Nina is funded by a summer vacation scholarship from the Biochemical Society.

April 27, 2018 – Had great fun talking about meiosis and chromosome segregation, and visiting i3S Porto – always nice seeing and catching up with colleagues. Awesome city!

April 18, 2018 – An exciting week as we take an Inverted Lightsheet microscope from Bruker for a test drive with mammalian oocytes!

April 17, 2018 – Had very enlightening discussions about meiosis and embryogenesis after delivering a seminar at Cardiff University. Collaborations coming soon!

March 21, 2018 – A surprise talk at the BSCB Dynamic Cell meeting in Manchester – stepped in to substitute for an unavailable speaker to discuss our work on the function of spindle actin in accurate chromosome segregation in mammalian eggs.

March 1, 2018 – Did the first ever experiment in the new lab on a very snowy day, 53 days since starting Bristol – eggs happily maturing! 🙂 felt good to get back to the bench!

February 20, 2018 – The long-awaited preLights webpage is now live! For my first highlight, I’ve selected an exciting preprint that shows a new function of actin in blocking premature interaction of chromosomes and microtubules. Read it here.

December 1-6, 2017 – Binyam attends ASCB meeting in Philadelphia – so much fun at posters and talks, and a great time networking! 🙂

November 19, 2017 – Small equipment purchase and lab space organisation is underway! 

November 16, 2017 – Trim-away, a new method for acute and rapid degradation of endogenous proteins – paper now onilne in Cell!

November 8, 2017 – Start date in Bristol is now confirmed. January 8, 2017!! 😮

October 10, 2017 – Binyam gives a talk at Jacobs University Bremen in Germany – very interesting discussions with faculty members and potential summer students.

September 26, 2017 – Binyam gives a seminar at the University of Dundee, School of Life Sciences, A day filled with insightful discussions with plenty of Cell Cycle folks and the Tanaka Lab.

September 20, 2017  –  Binyam gives a talk on superresolution live imaging of light-sensitive events in mammalian meiosis at ZEISS headquarters in Oberkochen, the only city in Germany that has no traffic lights. 🙂

September 8, 2017 – Binyam gives a seminar at the Institute of Genetics and Molecular and Cellular Biology in France hosted by the Sumara Lab.
